Episode II is About to Begin

It's now three months into the new year and the world is still in limbo as President Bush continues to talk tough regarding Iraq. Although February saw many anti-war demonstrations in major capitals around the world, the U.S. President remains unswayed by world opinion. Indeed, these are very interesting times not only for students of Political Science and International Affairs but for all of us. It seems that the U.N. has become a check against American power as opposed to a check on rogue countries.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has lost the popularity and strong backing he once enjoyed. Recent polls in his country have him at an all time low of 35%. He now remembers that he is the PM of Great Britain and has toned down the rhetoric, be it just a notch, and is trying to come up with a compromise.

The truth of the matter is our President has made up his mind. He made up his mind a long time ago and war is now inevitable. It is no longer a question of if but when. One only has to look at the build-up of the troops in that region to quickly conclude that there is no way President Bush will back down. If he backs down then he loses face.

In our moment of grief, those of us living in America were led to believe that we must attack Saddam because of 9/11, although there has not been a shred of evidence connecting Saddam to the 9/11 attacks. If we are serious about eradicating terrorism, why are we not going after the Saudis? After all wouldn't that make more sense since practically all of the 9/11 attackers were from that country?

So where did we go wrong? Ok, 9/11 happened. There was a need to strike back. But who were we going to strike? We were not attacked by another country. Here we were dealt a deadly blow by terrorists, countryless terrorists.

Maybe, had we not tried to link Iraq to 9/11 and just said, "Well we are going to clean up terrorism and by the way you know what, Saddam agreed to a peace treaty which brought a ceasefire in the Gulf war, he is not complying with the U.N. resolutions and so we are going to enforce these resolutions," the world could have been swayed. But instead we started a lie, and now people are seeing through it.

I do not want to be attacked. Like you, I do not want to have to be looking over my shoulder when I walk in the street. I do not want to have the constant fear of being unsafe. I do not want to have to look at someone from the Middle East in a suspect manner if and when I see someone from the region. And so there must be a better way to come to an agreement.

Well be on your guard. We are way down in unchartered waters. It must have seemed strange that just this week, the Pope sent a representative to see the President regarding the impending war. As expected this had no effect on the President. I do not believe that the President is listening or has been listening for quite sometime now. However, he is a man of conviction and he is a believer. So only divine intervention can hold back his hand. And if no such intervention occurs, the in a matter of days, the entire world shall see his wrath.

But before you get all cozy in your bed, thinking you are going to be safe and secured because Saddam is gone and there is regime change in Iraq, you better think again. President Bush is about to open pandora's box and life as we know it will never be the same.
