The Mystery Poet - SINSUALMIND
By Dwight Day
Born Reneé Johnson in Texas, now living in
Germany, she goes by the poetic name Sinsualmind. There is more than meets the eye where
this 26 year-old marketing/advertising agent is concerned. And that is only if you have
been lucky enough to have seen a picture of her or to have met her in person. It keeps the
mystery and mystique alive. Sinsualmind started writing poetry when she was in high school. She did not consider it poetry. She merely saw it as her thoughts on paper. Now she looks back and can see the innocence in those early words. She has been featured in Rhapsody magazine, The Visual Voice e-zine, and on many websites such as Timbooktu.com, Blaqueimage.com, UrbanGoat.com, Fireseek aka Urbanpoetic.com, NubianChronicles, and the list goes on. She has been featured on "Play Me", a compilation CD of erotic spoken word produced by Mental Food (www.mentalfood.com), and also makes an appearance on "In My Solitude", a jazz CD written and produced by Sondjata Olatunji (www.ivprod.com). She is also working with Nowledge of Self aka Rugged Terrain, a hip-hop group from Florida. She does not like to re-read her work unless she is planning on performing it. The first time she performed her poetry was at a "slam" four years ago. What is a slam? I had to ask too. It's an open-mic contest. There was a panel of six judges, two of whom were taken from the audience. She had never done this before and had no clue as to what she was getting into. There is a time limit, which if exceeded, the performer is penalized. She was reading her poetry, while the norm was just to perform. Although she had been on stage on numerous occasions, she was still nervous. She made it through the four rounds to the final round and surprised herself by placing second. "When I share my poetry, I'm sharing a solid part of who I am," says Sinsualmind. By reading her poetry you will see her. You will experience in some way, either something to which she looks forward to, something she's going through at the time, or something she has already experienced. Although she is known for writing provocative poetry, her two signature poems are "So Address Me As Such" and "There Are No Weak Women Here". Both poems speak positively about women in general and about black women in particular. They describe the black woman as diverse and being able to handle herself in any situation - a good mother, the sista from the hood, someone with wit and a great sense of humor, a corporate exec, and a woman who will settle for nothing less than respect - she can hold her own in any situation and at the same time she knows how to be sexy. So what frustrates the poet? She absolutely does not appreciate people online stealing her work and claiming it as their own. She has confronted a few individuals who actually had posted her work on personal web pages on Blackplanet and AOL, claiming it as their own. She finds this behavior disrespectful. "It's cool to enjoy a poem and it's flattering that one would place it on their site, but to pass it off as theirs is unacceptable, disrespectful, and shows that particular person's lack of creativity." She finds it comical sometimes when she confronts people who have taken credit for her work because of some of their responses, but at the same time, she takes her work very seriously. She finds comfort however, in just knowing that the work is hers and that it is copyrighted. She stresses the importance for writers to copyright their work. Sinsualmind is currently working on her book and a CD, which she hopes will be out later this year.
